China Sets 50% Non-Fossil Electricity Target in 2026-2030 Energy Plan
China has released its 2026-2030 energy development plan, setting a target for non-fossil sources to supply 50 percent of the country’s electricity generation by 2030. The plan, issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, outlines key goals for expanding renewable energy capacity and enhancing energy security.
This development matters because it formalizes the next phase of China’s energy transition, with specific benchmarks for wind, solar, and overall energy production. The plan also emphasizes technological self-reliance and market reforms, signaling a comprehensive approach to reshaping the energy sector.
Non-Fossil Electricity and Renewable Capacity Targets
The plan explicitly targets non-fossil sources to account for 50 percent of electricity generation by 2030. Additionally, wind and solar power are expected to make up more than 50 percent of total installed power-generation capacity by the same year. These targets align with China’s broader climate goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. Source Source
Domestic Energy Production Capacity
China plans to raise its total annual energy production capacity to 5.8 billion tonnes of standard coal equivalent by 2030. This target underscores the country’s focus on bolstering domestic energy output to meet growing demand while transitioning to cleaner sources. Source Source
Energy Security and Infrastructure
The plan stresses the optimization of fossil energy production bases, better alignment between energy development and energy-consuming industries, and continued expansion of diversified energy import channels. It also calls for accelerating the construction of a new energy infrastructure system that is strong and resilient, green and low-carbon, integrated, intelligent and efficient. Source
Power-Market Reform and Technological Self-Reliance
A unified national electricity market system is to be basically established under the plan. Furthermore, the plan aims to make key technologies and equipment in the energy industrial chain largely self-reliant and controllable. These measures are designed to enhance efficiency and reduce dependence on foreign technology. Source
