The CATL Supplier Network: How One Company’s Ecosystem Shapes China’s Battery Supply Chain
CATL’s 80+ company investment portfolio creates a vertically integrated battery empire
CATL’s influence extends far beyond battery manufacturing. The company’s corporate venture capital arm has invested in over 80 companies across the energy value chain, creating an ecosystem that spans lithium mining, cathode materials, separators, battery recycling, charging infrastructure, and energy storage.
The ecosystem approach gives CATL several advantages:
- Supply security: investments in lithium miners (Pilbara Minerals, Manono) ensure raw material access
- Technology lock-in: investments in cathode and anode producers align their R&D with CATL’s cell chemistry
- Demand creation: investments in charging networks and energy storage operators create demand for CATL batteries
- Information advantage: CATL sees market trends across the entire value chain, not just the battery segment
The IPO pipeline
Multiple CATL-backed companies are preparing for IPOs in 2026, creating a wave of new investment opportunities linked to the battery giant. The companies span lithium recycling, battery management systems, power electronics, and energy storage — each benefiting from CATL’s scale and market access.
“CATL is building a Berkshire Hathaway of energy,” said an analyst at CICC. “The ecosystem creates value that’s not captured in CATL’s own stock price.”
Implications for competitors
CATL’s ecosystem strategy raises barriers for competitors. LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On (the Korean battery trio) operate primarily as standalone manufacturers without comparable investment portfolios. BYD has a similar ecosystem but keeps it largely internal (supplies primarily to its own vehicles).
For companies that compete with CATL-backed firms — whether in battery materials, charging, or storage — the challenge is formidable. They’re not just competing against a single company; they’re competing against an integrated ecosystem.
